GNGWC FINAL Recap day by day

Date Sep 29, 2006 Views 8,417
On September 23rd, the most anticipated final and finale of the Game and Game World Championship 2006 (or GNGWC 2006) took place in Suwon, Korea. Shot-Online, one of official games in GNGWC, planned a whole thing from last May and executed flawlessly. Fourteen players from all over the world, from Korea, USA, England, Japan, Netherland, Finland to Singapore, competed one another for the final yet had a wonderful time with audience also.

Here is a recap for those who couldn’t be there with us.

Friday, September 22
Players from seven different countries poured into the Incheon airport. Most of them have never been in Korea before but didn’t have much trouble to settle in thanks to Shot-online staffs.

[The Welcome Reception]
Players were escorted to the welcome reception at hotel, where they enjoyed a series of Korean traditional shows and conversation with Sungju Hong, a CEO of OnNet.

After the reception, Simon, who came from England, participated in a tape cutting ceremony at Suwon Stadium, which was a venue for opening ceremony. Other attendees included Suwon Mayor and other VIPs. We all enjoyed the Go Suwon opening ceremony, Taekwondo demonstration, and M-net music show.

Saturday, September 23
The big day finally came. We have created match rosters by random selection and the tournament was one on one. Even though it was a short 9-hole match, everyone took this challenge with undivided attention. Some players even brought their own mice with them.

The most impressive was cheering from guilds; especially Nanum guild who sent two finalists- yongjjang and linaitiger. Almost twenty people from Nanum guild gathered and flashed their banners at the venue. Thanks to guilds, the stadium was packed and cheering was amazing.

[Shot-online semi final]
All players ran neck-and-neck. We had a tie from the first round. Linaitiger and yongjjang faced each other at quarter-final and singapre and fin_flash faced off at semi-final. Audience went crazy when yongjjang met his match, fin_flash at semi-final, which looked like a de facto final. In the meantime, Shot-online set up a hospitality booth where we welcomed players with foods and freebies. We also had an event such as “instant treasure box” to entertain already tired audience and players.

At 4 pm, the final match finally began. The match was broadcasted through a big screen, and Roy (Netherland) and Simon (England) helped audience enjoyed the match better with their witty comments.

The final was a close one. Towards the end, however, yongjjang lost his control and moog didn’t miss the chance- he finished as the first.]

1st: moog (Japan)
2nd: yongjjang (Korea)
3rd: randoodskeez (USA)
4th: fin_flash (Finland)

Altogether $ 10,000 prize was rewarded to winners. Also, a GNGWC2006 medal was given to all participants as a token of appreciation.

After the final, we had a press conference with players and Shot-online developers about an hour. We all shared thoughts and ideas and promised players to improve Shot-online better.

Sunday, September 24

Players spent their last day in Seoul as sightseeing Suwon but on some level we all felt sad about this coming to the end. We all promised to meet again next year. It was incredible for us that people with different background, languages, and culture brought together here by a game, Shot-online. We have to say that it was a really exciting experience. And we said goodbye to one other. We would like to finish this recap with Kenneth’s interview. We believe that everyone at GNGWC felt the same way.

“Shot-online has an edge over other golf games on reality and graphic. Besides the game, I greatly appreciate the community; gamers, developers and staffs. Gamers try to help each other and value sportsmanship. Now I have friends all over the world thanks to Shot-online. Above all, I cherish the experience that I learned so much about Korea, Korean and their culture. I used to know China and Japan before but with this opportunity, I witnessed the true Korea. People here welcomed me with their hearts and were always nice. I am really happy to be here.
